One needn't be a grammar expert to use this text, though being familiar with the metalanguage would be helpful in negotiating this comprehensive read: huge text. Recommended for all academic libraries. In all seriousness, this is the grammar reference book I'd recommend.

An uncomfortable and frustrating read: Algebraic symbols abound coupled with baffling new terminology and bizarre analyses. The book is wonderful, for example, in the preposition chapters or the adjective chapters, he compares these parts of speech with other parts of speech. Written by highly respected experts in the field using extensive corpus research, it offers comprehensive coverage of spoken and written English based on real everyday usage. But potential readers beware, if they want to buy a traditional grammar of the English language as they may well be very disappointed in my view with this. The book draws on descriptive and theoretical advances made in modern linguistics, but any significant departures from traditional grammar are pointed out. No other grammar of English is at once as comprehensive and as systematically and lucidly informed by present-day linguistic theory. The grammatical categories postulated derive from a study of the combinational and contrastive relationships the words and other forms enter into, and Dr Huddleston pays particular attention to the problem of choosing between alternative analyses and justifying the analysis he proposes.

An authoritative addition to the fields of both English grammar and linguistics. This is part of my goals for improving my analytical skills. The main problem with previous grammar books was their habit of analyzing English as though it were a Latin language, attributing to it characteristics it does not intrinsically contain which this book promptly denies , such as the existence of an inflectional subjunctive mood.
